Contemporary African Art Since 1980, a new book by Okwui Enwezor and Chika Okeke-Agulu, is the most comprehensive collection I've ever seen of modern art from or about Africa, by African artists. The book explores how political, social, and cultural changes over the past thirty years have shaped urban, indigenous, and globalized "diasporic" art forms. Contemporary African Art is a roadmap of change and of evolving identities.

Art movie dose - Beautiful Losers

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Turn it up! - Tweet feat. Missy Elliott

Art dose - Olaf Breuning via BECK

Breuning squirreled away popular culture references that he would later effectively employ in his pieces. He absorbed the music of Talking Heads, Eurythmics and Grace Jones; the photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Jeff Wall and Cindy Sherman; and the sculpture of Jeff Koons. He cites as influences everything from sci-fi to horror via Vikings and haunted houses. His photographs, installations, and films feature a recurring vocabulary; face-painting, eyeballs attached to inanimate objects, long cheap wigs, naked breasts or direct movie allusions.

Art dose - The Magnitude of the Continental Divides

The Magnitude of the Continental Divides from Chris Coleman.
"The Magnitude of the Continental Divides" is an animation exploring the ways we define ourselves and our nations. It is a journey between many locations in various states of withdrawal and aggression. Borders become weaponized and damage is always dealt from afar. The individual is caught in the midst, unable to separate themselves, unable to define identity without place.

Morning Art - We Kill You

"The street art is where it all began. In 2003 I had drawn 6 little monsters. I thought it would be really funny if I could glue a collage of them under a bridge near my house where the local kids like to do their graffiti. I photocopied about 100 of these monsters and made glue out of flower and water, like they had taught us in grade school with paper mache. It looked great so I continued to do it all around my neighborhood and branched out into the downtown core of Toronto. At the time I had no idea that
what I was doing was called Wheat Pasting and was being done by artists all around the world.

Where are they now?

Apparently this is an old collection, but it's new around here.

“These came from a collection of over 400 Polaroid photos of strippers trying out for dancing jobs at a So. Cal club. They were taken from the late 1960’s thru the early 1970’s. I decided to create a new Flickr account to share this collection with other photographers. They document fashion, interior decor, and a time when bodies were for the most part, natural. The Polaroid film makes for an even more nostalgic feel. The main interest I have with these photos is the aesthetics of an era, not just as titillation. As an artist and photographer I find these women beautiful, daring and sometimes desperate. Each woman here has a story, and each one deserves our respect.”
